Quick Guide
- Head north from Route 104 (South) and enter Petalburg Woods.
- As you approach the forest’s north exit, defeat the Team Aqua/Magma Grunt to help the Devon Researcher.
- Exit Petalburg Woods and head north to reach Rustboro City.
Route 104 – South Side
Route 104 has two sections: north and south, divided by Petalburg Woods in the middle.
The south side includes Mr. Briney’s house, an important NPC later on in the story. Apart from a few trainers, there isn’t much to do, so you can proceed at your leisure heading north towards Petalburg Woods.

North Exit to Petalburg Woods
Northwest of Mr. Briney’s house is the entrance to Petalburg Woods. When you find it, enter the forest.
Petalburg Woods
To reach Route 104’s north side, you’ll need to find the forest’s exit. Starting from the entrance, turn left and follow the linear path that goes north.
Team Aqua/Magma Battle
Along the way, you’ll encounter a Devon Researcher about to be robbed by a Team Aqua/Magma Grunt.
Help him out by defeating the grunt, who only has a Lv. 9 Poochyena.
After you defeat him, the Devon Researcher will give you the Exp. Share. It grants experience to ALL Pokémon in your party after battles or after you catch a Pokémon. Toggle it ON or OFF under the Key Items pocket in your Bag.

North Exit to Route 104 – North Side
After the Devon researcher returns to Rustboro City, continue onward to find the exit to Route 104’s north side.
Tip: The prickly tree near the exit can be cut using HM01 Cut, opening up a new area inside Petalburg Woods with more obtainable items. There you’ll also find the Moss Rock, which allows Eevee to evolve into Leafeon.
Route 104 – North Side
After exiting the forest, head northwest to find the Flower Shop. Here you can get the Wailmer Pail to grow your own berries.
You can also purchase decorative plants, but this is only available when you have your Secret Base.
If you want to catch Pokémon here, the only patch of tall grass is hidden behind the Flower Shop. Taillow is more common here than on Route 104’s south side.

When you’ve finished exploring the west side, head towards the pond on the right. Then cross the bridge north towards Rustboro City.
North Exit to Rustboro City
After crossing the bridge, follow the dirt road north until you reach the entrance to Rustboro City.
