The Lagging Tail can only be obtained from wild Slowpoke. Each Slowpoke you encounter has a 5% chance of carrying this item, so you may have to farm for a while before you find a Slowpoke with this item.
And you can only find Slowpoke in two Mirage Cave locations. These mirage spots appear randomly on the map, and you need to soar with the Eon Flute to reach them.
Prerequisites
Before you can find wild Slowpoke, make sure you’ve done the following:
- Acquire the Eon Flute
- Defeat Primal Groudon/Kyogre
Mirage spots will begin spawning over Hoenn once you defeat Primal Groudon or Kyogre. And the only way to enter these mirage locations is by soaring with Latios/Latias.
While soaring, you can recognize a mirage spot by a red sparkle floating above a location on the map (as seen below).
Farming Wild Slowpoke
Location #1: Mirage Cave – North of Fallarbor Town
The first location where you can find Slowpoke is a Mirage Cave that can appear north of Fallarbor Town. You have a 40% chance of encountering wild Slowpoke here.
You can spot this Mirage Cave while soaring near Fallarbor Town here (circled below).
After landing on the island, follow the singular path to the cave where you can find wild Slowpoke.
Location #2: Mirage Cave – South of Pacifidlog Town
You can also find Slowpoke in a Mirage Cave that can appear south of Pacifidlog Town. But Slowpoke here only have a 10% encounter rate in this location.
While soaring, watch out for a red sparkle on a remote island near Pacifidlog Town (circled below).
Once you land, you’ll only have one path to follow to get inside the cave where you can encounter wild Slowpoke.
Obtaining Lagging Tails
Wild Slowpoke each have a 5% chance of holding a Lagging Tail. So you could just catch every one you find, but it’s better to bring a Pokémon that knows Thief to steal the item from them if they’re holding it.

Uses
A Pokémon holding a Lagging Tail will always move last in its priority bracket, ignoring its Speed stat completely.
This item doesn’t affect the holder’s Speed – It just makes its holder move last during the turn.
This item is best used with Pokémon that know item-switching moves such as Trick and Switcheroo. With that strategy you’d want to give Lagging Tail to your opponent so you can always move first, even if you’re using Pokémon with a low Speed stat.
