There are three different methods for obtaining the Deep Sea Scale.
The first method involves using Thief to steal the scale from wild Chinchou, Lanturn, or Relicanth, which can all be found in most underwater routes.
Alternatively, you have the chance to find a Deep Sea Scale in Mirage Spots – specifically, in Crescent Isle and in any Mirage Mountain.
And exclusively in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, you can also obtain a Deep Sea Scale as a reward for completing the Mauville Ramen Bowl in the Mauville Food Court. To obtain this reward you must finish the Mauville Ramen Bowl course in exactly 8 turns and defeat all 8 Trainers.
Method 1: Stealing from Wild Chinchou, Lanturn, or Relicanth
Deep Sea Scales can be obtained from wild Chinchou, Lanturn, or Relicanth. To encounter one of these Pokémon underwater, use HM07 Dive in the diving spots present on the following routes:
- Route 107
- Route 124
- Route 126
- Route 128
- Route 129
- Route 130
When you encounter any of these Pokémon, there’s a 5% chance they will be holding a Deep Sea Scale. To take the item, use a Pokémon that knows TM46 Thief. We also have a separate guide with details on how to optimally farm held items from wild Pokémon.
Method 2: Crescent Isle and Mirage Mountains
Upon obtaining the Eon Flute from Steven, you’ll be able to soar through Hoenn’s skies, granting you access to Mirage Spots.
Mirage Spots are rare locations that can randomly be found while soaring the Hoenn region. Each day, a random Mirage Spot appears on the outskirts of Hoenn, marked by a red sparkle; these Mirage Spots fall into one of five categories:
- Mirage Cave
- Mirage Forest
- Mirage Island
- Mirage Mountain
- Crescent Isle
In Mirage Mountains and Crescent Isle, you can find various hidden items including a Deep Sea Scale. You can find one unique item per spot per day. All potential items found in these locations include:
Location | Items |

Crescent Isle |

Mirage Mountain |

The image below highlights all possible Mirage Mountain locations, as well as the fixed location of Crescent Isle. If none of the Mirage Spots below are currently active then you can adjust the time settings on your 3DS or emulator until any of them appear.

Method 3: Mauville Food Court (Alpha Sapphire Exclusive)
In Pokémon Alpha Sapphire exclusively, completing the Mauville Ramen Bowl at the Mauville Food Court in exactly eight turns and defeating all the Trainers there will earn you a Deep Sea Scale.
If you don’t know where the Mauville Food Court is or how to unlock the Mauville Ramen Bowl, take a look at our page here detailing everything you need to know about this side-quest. The page has a list of all orders available at the Mauville Food Court, along with the details on how to unlock them and the turn limits for each battle type.
After successfully completing both the Village Sub Combo and the Magnemite Croquette challenges, as well as finishing the Delta Episode, you’ll find that the line for the Mauville Ramen Bowl has cleared out. Talk to the Black Belt behind the counter to place an order for the Mauville Ramen Bowl.
Mauville Ramen Bowl
When you order the Mauville Ramen Bowl, you’ll be given a turn limit of 8. This means that if it takes you one turn to defeat each trainer in a Triple Battle, you will encounter a total of 8 trainers. Depending on your performance, here are the possible rewards for this particular order:
Reward | Method | Version |
---|---|---|
Big Nugget x2 | Finish the Mauville Ramen Bowl course in exactly 8 turns | OR/AS |
Deep Sea Scale | Finish the Mauville Ramen Bowl course in exactly 8 turns and defeat all 8 Trainers | AS |
Deep Sea Tooth | Finish the Mauville Ramen Bowl course in exactly 8 turns and defeat all 8 Trainers | OR |
Uses
Outside of Battle
The Deep Sea Scale is one of two Evolution items specifically designed for Clamperl’s evolutions. When a Clamperl holding a Deep Sea Scale is traded, it will evolve into Gorebyss.
On the other hand, when a Clamperl holding a Deep Sea Tooth is traded, it will evolve into Huntail.
In Battle
The Deep Sea Scale is a held item that, when held by Clamperl in battle, double its Special Defense. The Deep Sea Scale has no effect in battle when held by any Pokémon other than Clamperl.
