This page contains information on Egg Moves, specifically how this breeding mechanic works and also the limitations that apply to passing on Egg Moves.

Quick Guide

Below is a very quick overview summary on how to pass down an Egg Move in Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire:

  1. Have at least one parent Pokémon (either the male or the female) that knows one (or more) Egg Move(s)
  2. Breed the parent Pokémon with another Pokémon from a compatible egg group, or with a Ditto
  3. If the baby or 1st evolutionary stage Pokémon has the egg move in its learnset, then the bred Pokémon is guaranteed to inherit an Egg Move from the parent Pokémon
Note: Egg Moves can be passed down by both parents, with no gender restrictions.

Egg Moves Basics

Egg Moves can only be learned by a Pokémon through breeding. In other words, it applies to moves that cannot be learned by a Pokémon through normal methods, like leveling up, or with the help of HMs, TMs, and move tutors.

For example, the Blaziken line cannot learn Baton Pass through normal methods. However, by breeding a female Blaziken with a male Eevee that knows Baton Pass, then you will obtain a Torchic with Baton Pass as an Egg Move.

Egg Moves can be passed down by both parents.

Egg Moves Limitations

Each individual Pokémon can only learn Egg Moves from a preset list. In other words, you won’t be able to breed a Swampert that knows Blaze Kick, or a Blaziken that knows Waterfall.

Another limitation applies to incense breeding. Certain baby Pokémon, like Azurill and Wynaut, can only be obtained if one of the parent Pokémon is given an incense item to hold.

In some cases, baby Pokémon and their evolutions will have different Egg Moves. Here are some examples:

  • Wynaut can inherit Encore as an Egg Move, while Wobbuffet can’t
  • Munchlax can inherit Explosion as an Egg Move, while Snorlax can’t
  • On the other hand, Snorlax can inherit Fissure as an Egg Move, while Munchlax can’t

Alternative Method – DexNav

Some Hidden Pokémon in the wild may also have Egg Moves. You can use the DexNav’s “Search” function to verify it.

If a Hidden Pokémon has an Egg Move, the DexNav will display an exclamation mark alongside the Pokémon’s first move.

As an example, you will have a scripted encounter with a Hidden wild Poochyena early on in the game. This Poochyena is guaranteed to have one of the three elemental fang moves (Fire Fang, Ice Fang, or Thunder Fang).
