The DexNav is a PokéNav Plus app in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire. It can be used to search for specific Pokémon in the wild.

Using the DexNav will help you find hidden Pokémon encounters, and it will also boost your chances of encountering shiny Pokémon, finding wild Pokémon with Hidden Abilities or Egg Moves, and also finding wild Pokémon with up to three perfect IVs.

This page will explain how to use the DexNav for all of these features to help you find hidden Pokémon, search levels, chain encounters, and to track down National Dex-exclusive Pokémon.

DexNav Basics

You can access the DexNav by tapping its icon on the PokéNav Plus. You’ll find the button at the top on the right-hand menu of buttons.

The DexNav will display the wild Pokémon you can find in the current area. Pokémon you’ve already caught will have their full sprite displayed, while Pokémon you’ve yet to catch will be shown as silhouettes instead.

The crown icon on the top-right corner indicates your progress in the area.

Initially the crown will have a bronze color, and will progress to silver, then gold. Once you encounter and catch all Pokémon in the area, the crown will turn platinum.

Searching Pokémon

Tapping a Pokémon on the DexNav page will activate the search feature.

Tapping the “Search” button will force that Pokémon to spawn as a hidden encounter in the area.

Note: This feature will only work on Pokémon you’ve already caught.

The DexNav will also detect overworld Pokémon, like flocks of birds or interactable Pokémon.

When that happens, a magnifying glass icon will show on the screen. Tapping the icon will let you register these Pokémon as “seen” in the Pokédex.

Hidden Pokémon

The DexNav will also indicate whenever there is a hidden Pokémon nearby by displaying a magnifying glass icon.

Hidden Pokémon appear as silhouettes in the overworld, and can be found in all areas with wild encounters.

Some National Dex-exclusive Pokémon will only appear as hidden encounters.

You can only approach a hidden Pokémon by sneaking up to it.

Sneaking Mechanics

In order to sneak, you have to either gently push the circle pad without fully tilting it (on the 3DS), or press the “Circle Mod” key if you are playing on an emulator.

You will not be able to sneak while executing the following actions:

  • Using the Dowsing Machine
  • Moving with the D-Pad
  • Surfing on a Sharpedo
  • Riding a bicycle

The following actions will also startle a hidden Pokémon and cause them to flee:

  • Walking or running near the Pokémon
  • Either riding the bike or dismounting near the Pokémon
  • Jumping down a ledge near the Pokémon
  • If an NPC runs into the hidden Pokémon
  • Entering a wild battle will also cause the hidden Pokémon to disappear

If you manage to get closer to the hidden Pokémon, the DexNav will display more detailed information on the Pokémon.

Hidden Pokémon can have a higher chance of any of the following rare traits:

  • Between one and three perfect IVs
  • A Hidden Ability (indicated by an exclamation mark)
  • An Egg Move (indicated by an exclamation mark)
  • A higher level than the regular wild Pokémon found in the area
  • Higher chance of a held item
  • Shiny

Search Levels

Encountering a Pokémon, either in the wild or as an interactable Pokémon via DexNav, will increase the Search Level for that species. Search Levels range from 0 to 999.

Higher Search Levels will improve your chances of finding hidden Pokémon with rare traits, as shown in the table below.

Search Levels for Shinies

Calculations for Shiny Pokémon are done slightly differently than in the table above.

The following table lists the chances of finding a Shiny Pokémon based on the DexNav’s Search Level and with a boost from the Shiny Charm.

Chain Encounters

Chaining multiple encounters with hidden Pokémon will increase your chances of finding a Shiny Pokémon. You can use the search feature to force additional encounters for a chain.

The chain will continue if you either defeat or catch the Pokémon. Running away from the battle, startling the hidden Pokémon, leaving the area, or resetting the game will break the chain.

While the chain is still going, encounters that are multiples of 5 will have a 4% boost to the Shiny rate. The 50th and the 100th encounters will also have a slightly higher Shiny rate.

Aside from the multiples of 5, the DexNav also has a small chance of randomly boosting the Shiny rate by 4% during any other encounter during the chain.
