In Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, the base Shiny odds are 1 in 4,096 (0.024%) for both wild encounters and eggs. But with the right methods you can dramatically improve these odds.

This guide breaks down the fastest and most efficient ways to hunt Shinies in these games.

It’s important to note that while ORAS offers multiple Shiny hunting methods, there’s no single “best” approach. The optimal choice depends entirely on which Pokémon you want to obtain. That said, the following three methods offer the highest possible odds without requiring the Shiny Charm:

Method Highest Odds Possible (No Shiny Charm) Best For
Chain Fishing 1/100 at max chain Quickest Shiny Hunt, but limited to fishable Pokémon
DexNav Chaining As low as 1/46 Hunting any Wild Pokemon, but high odds only apply to Chain Bonus encounters
Masuda Method 1/683 Hunting any breedable Pokemon, Requires foreign Pokemon
Note: If you’re willing to complete the National Pokédex then your reward is the Shiny Charm which makes almost every method significantly faster. It works by adding two extra rerolls when determining if a Pokémon is Shiny, effectively tripling your base odds.

All Shiny Hunting Methods

Below is a complete overview of all available shiny hunting methods in the game. The table also shows how the Shiny Charm affects the odds for each method, both with and without it:

Method Odds without Shiny Charm Odds with Shiny Charm
Random Encounter 1/4096 1/1365
Horde Encounter 1/819 1/273
Masuda Method 1/683 1/512
DexNav 1/476 at Search Lv. 999 1/173 at Search Lv. 999
DexNav Chain Bonus up to 1/99 on 50th, 1/56 on 100th up to 1/73 on 50th, 1/46 on 100th
Chain Fishing 1/100 at chain of 20 1/96 at chain of 20
Gift Pokémon 1/4096 1/4096

The following sections will detail specific step-by-step tutorials on how to execute each of the better shiny hunting methods to put them into action.

1. Random Encounters + Horde Encounter

In Random Encounters, you hunt Shiny Pokémon purely by chance while walking in tall grass, caves, or other wild areas. This is essentially what you’ve been doing naturally during your playthrough.

While not efficient, some hunters intentionally use this method for the thrill of finding a Shiny at full odds.

While standard random encounters are inefficient, Horde Encounters dramatically improve your odds. By using Sweet Scent to force Horde Encounters, you essentially encounter five Pokémon at the same time.

However, in this method, you can only shiny hunt Pokémon that appear in horde encounters.

Method Odds without Shiny Charm Odds with Shiny Charm
Random Encounter 1/4096 1/1365
Horde Encounter 1/819 1/273

Preparation

Required
  • A Pokémon with the move Sweet Scent – triggers hordes instantly when used outside of battle
  • Alternative: Honey (less efficient)
Optional
  • High Lv. False Swipe + Status Move user (for safe catching)
  • Pokémon with the Ability Synchronize (for Static Encounters) – 50% chance to pass Nature to wild Pokémon

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Locate a Horde Spot – Find an area where your target Pokémon appears in hordes

2. Breeding: Masuda Method

The Masuda Method is the most reliable way to breed Shiny Pokémon in ORAS.

This method involves breeding two Pokémon from different language games (ex. a Japanese Ditto with your starter). It’s the only way to simultaneously hunt Shinies while controlling IVs, nature, and egg moves.

Method Odds without Shiny Charm Odds with Shiny Charm
Masuda Method 1/683 1/512

Preparation

Required
  • Foreign Ditto (or foreign parent) – Tagged with a different language in the info screen (ex. JPN, FRE, GER etc.)
  • Local Target Pokémon (The one you want as a Shiny) – It shouldn’t be in the Undiscovered Egg Group or it should be compatible with your foreign parent (if you’re not breeding with Ditto)
Optional
  • Pokémon with the Flame Body or Magma Armor Ability – Halves egg hatch time
  • Hatching O-Power Lv. 1-3 – Faster egg hatching
  • Everstone – To pass down 5 IVs from its parents
  • Destiny Knot – To pass down the holder’s nature

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Obtain a Foreign Ditto / Parent – Trade for a non-English Ditto / Parent. It should have the mark in the top-left corner for it to be considered a Foreign Pokemon.

3. DexNav Chaining

DexNav Chaining is a shiny hunting method that combines:

  1. Search Levels (tracked per Pokémon species)
  2. Encounter Chains (consecutive catches/KOs of the same species)

The following table shows how DexNav Chaining boosts Shiny odds through two scaling factors: your Pokémon’s Search Level and current chain length. Both higher Search Levels and longer chains progressively increase your chances, with bonus odds every 5 encounters and significant boosts at chains of 50 and 100:

DexNav Chaining Shiny Odds WITHOUT Shiny Charm
Chain Length Search Level 0 Search Level 84-100 Search Level 401-500 Search Level 901-999

Preparation

Required
  • High Lv. False Swipe + Status Move user (for safe catching)
  • Repels – prevents unwanted encounters and maintain chains
Optional
  • Counter – To keep track of your chain
  • Pokémon with the Ability Synchronize – 50% chance to pass Nature to wild Pokémon

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Boost Search Level – Repeatedly encounter your target Pokemon up to Search Lv. 999. You can also do this passively by starting the chain.

4. Chain Fishing

Chain Fishing boosts shiny odds by consecutively hooking Pokémon without moving or missing a reel-in.

Each successful encounter extends the chain, maxing out at a 1/100 shiny chance after 20+ chains. Catching, fainting, or running away from the encounter won’t break the chain.

Method Odds without Shiny Charm Odds with Shiny Charm
Chain Fishing 1/100 at chain of 20 1/96 at chain of 20

Preparation

Required
  • Fishing Rod – Keep your Old Rod / Good Rod / Super Rod the only registered item for easy access.
  • Pokémon with the Ability Suction Cups or Sticky Hold – Increases bite chance when leading with it (even when fainted)
Optional
  • Counter – To keep track of your chain
  • False Swipe + Status Move user (for safe catching)
  • Smoke Ball – to guarantee running away from encounters

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Find a Fishing Spot – Look for where your fishing target has the highest encounter rate and head there.

5. Soft Resetting (SR)

Soft resetting (SR) is a shiny hunting method where you save before an encounter with a static Pokémon—like starters, legendaries, or gift Pokémon—then you repeatedly reset the game (L+R+Start/Select) to check for Shinies.

Each reset generates new stats, allowing you to “reroll” for a Shiny without battles or breeding.

Note: Gift Pokémon maintain base odds (1/4096) even with the Shiny Charm, while static encounters follow standard wild encounter rules – they benefit from the Shiny Charm unless the Pokémon is shiny-locked. The Shiny-Locked Pokémon are: Cosplay Pikachu, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Deoxys.
Method Odds without Shiny Charm Odds with Shiny Charm
Static Encounter 1/4096 1/1365
Gift Pokémon 1/4096 1/4096

Preparation

Required
  • Save Before the Interaction/Cutscene – The closer, the better
  • High Lv. False Swipe + Status Move user (for catching Static Encounters) – After successfully Soft Resetting a Shiny Static Encounter, you still need to catch it normally
Optional
  • Pokémon with the Ability Synchronize (for Static Encounters) – 50% chance to pass Nature to wild Pokémon

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Save in front of the Pokémon or before receiving the gift.
