Super Training is a fast EV training method that revolves around a minigame in the PokéNav Plus. This contrasts against Secret Super Training, which is unlocked for any Pokémon that achieves a maxed stat EV total of 510 points.

This page will detail the Super Training & Super Secret Training minigames and how they work.

The Basics

You can access the Super Training menu by tapping the PlayNav icon on the touch screen. It will be on the right-hand column of icons (below it’s highlighted as the middle button on the right-hand side).

After completing the tutorial, you will get to the Super Training screen.

On the right side of the screen, you will be able to see an Effort-o-Meter graphic with your Pokémon’s EVs.

The dark-green marker indicates the Pokémon’s base stats, while the yellow outline marker around it indicates the EV spread. As usual, you will be able to allocate 510 EVs in total.

You will be able to choose between Super Training and Core Training here. In order to enter Super Training, tap the icon on the bottom-left corner.

Super Training

Super Training offers six different courses, one for each stat:

  • Sp. Atk.
  • HP.
  • Attack.
  • Sp. Def.
  • Speed.
  • Defense

Each course has three different levels. In order to unlock a level, you simply have to complete the previous level once.

The Lv. 1 training courses

Super Training is a soccer-like minigame that requires you to score goals while facing off against a giant Pokémon-shaped balloon bot. You must hit the target score before the timer runs out.

Once you reach the target score, the balloon bot will pop, and you will win the minigame and complete the training course – and this will reward your winning Pokemon with EVs. But if you fail to reach the target score before the timer runs out then you will lose the minigame.

Successfully completing a training course will give your Pokémon between 4 and 12 EVs for the respective stat, depending on the course level:

Level EVs earned
Lv. 1 +4
Lv. 2 +8
Lv. 3 +12

How To Play

You want to get balls into various goals on the screen, with the primary end goal of obtaining as high a score as possible.

During the minigame, the goals will start off white, and they will turn yellow after eight seconds. Then after another four seconds, the yellow goals will disappear. Goals will also disappear once you hit them.

This mechanic will repeat itself for the duration of the minigame, with new goals popping up on the screen whenever the previous ones disappear.

You will also spot an orange circle on the bottom of the screen, which indicates your shooting power. Wait for the circle to fill before shooting the ball.

In order to shoot the ball, you will have to move the cursor on the touch screen. Move the cursor to aim your shot, and tap the screen to shoot the ball.

Note: While this cursor will also be displayed on the top screen, you will only be able to move it using the touch screen.

The balloon bot will attack you by shooting balls and smaller balloons. Getting hit by these attacks will reduce your score.

You can use the analog stick to move your Pokémon around and dodge incoming attacks. Alternatively, you can raise a barrier by pressing the “L” button, which will block one attack. However you will be unable to shoot while using this defensive block mechanic.

As you progress to Lv. 2 and Lv. 3, you will see some new mechanics added to the game.

Higher Level Mechanics

Sometimes the goal will turn red. Unlike white goals, the red goal will remain on the screen as long as you continue to hit the net.

The red goal will only disappear if you go scoreless for over 10 seconds.

Some balloon bots will also raise a barrier to protect themselves.

In order to break the barrier, you just need to hit the yellow target marker once.

Balloon bots have different attack patterns, which become more complex at levels 2 and 3.

Secret Super Training

Having a Pokémon with maxed out EVs (510) will unlock Secret Super Training.

Secret Super Training is extremely similar to Super Training. You will be playing a soccer-like minigame in which you will have to score goals in order to reach a certain points target.

But the opposing balloon bots will have significantly more complex attack patterns. Some Secret Super Training courses will even have you face off against two to four balloon bots in a row.

Since Secret Super Training only becomes available to Pokémon that have maxed out their EVs, this means you won’t be earning EVs as a reward here. Instead of EVs, you will be able to win prizes, including vitamins and evolutionary items.

Note: A Pokémon becomes eligible for Secret Super Training as soon as they reach 510 EVs. These Pokémon will remain eligible for Secret Super Training even if you reset their EVs.

How To Play

You will know if a Pokémon is eligible for Secret Super Training by checking the flexing icon graphic in the top-left corner of the touch screen.

At first, you will only have one Secret Super Training course available (“The Troubles Keep on Coming?!”).

Completing a Secret Super Training course will unlock the next one, and so on. There are 12 courses in total.

Just like in Super Training, if you complete the course within the target time, your Pokémon will be awarded a medal.

Pokémon that have earned medals in all 18 Super Training courses as well as in all 12 Secret Super Training courses will be eligible for the Training Ribbon by speaking to the Black Belt NPC directly south of the Dewford Town Pokecenter.

Core Training

Aside from Super Training, you can also use Core Training to EV train your Pokémon, or to get other benefits from various training bags.

Core Training is a simpler minigame where you just have to repeatedly tap a punching bag (Training Bags) on the touch screen. You will earn these Training Bags after completing a Super Training or a Secret Super Training Course.

Training Bags

There are three types of Training Bags: small, medium, and large.

Small bags will burst open after 10 hits, medium bags will burst open after 25 hits, and large bags will burst open after 50 hits.

If you burst open a Training Bag then your Pokémon will gain between 1 and 12 EVs, as detailed in the table below:

Training Bag Size EVs Gained
Small +1
Medium +4
Large +12
Note: Even if you don’t tap the punching bag, your Pokémon will automatically hit it once every minute, as long as the Super Training tab remains open on the touch screen. In other words, you can leave your game on idle and your Pokémon will still train on their own.

Occasionally you may see your Pokémon lying down on the touch screen. When this happens, simply tap them. Doing this will make your Pokémon “refreshed and ready for action”, which will make them continue to hit the bag every 30 seconds.

You can change Training Bags by tapping the punching bag icon on the bottom-right corner of the touch screen.
